9:00a - 9:45a "Building an e-Learning Culture" presented by: Dr. Marc Rosenberg

Keynote Address

Building a culture where learning thrives is a noble and important goal. But how is it done? What is the role of technology in building a learning culture and how does training, knowledge management and other forms of learning fit in? How does leadership, incentives, change management, collaboration and communication impact the acceptance of new learning technologies? Examine one of the most difficult challenges any organization can face. Examine why most e-learning initiatives are destined to fail and how to increase the likelihood of success. Learn why building an e-learning culture is even more vital as organizations deal with increasing competitive pressures and overwhelming amounts of new knowledge in a virtual and decentralized world.

11:00a - 11:45a "Integration of Performance and Consulting with Training Design & Development Processes"
Presented by Gary Wise: Director of Learning Methods & Technologies, Roche Diagnostics Corporation

Too many time thousands of dollars are invested in the design and development of world -class training only to find the outcome falls short of the desired performance objectives. Typically, the source of this shortfall stems back to the simple fact that training was designed to treat a symptom of the performance gap and not the real root cause. On further analysis, the "cure" often requires multiple interventions of which training is only a part of the solution. Conducting a root cause analysis and determining what exactly is causing the performance gaps will enable organizations to not only repair problems, but also implement other necessary interventions to ensure success. Performance consulting provides a tool-set every training professional who is involved in training management, assessments, design, development and delivery functions. This presentation is designed to outline the process at a high level and stimulate thinking around the importance of acquiring and applying the critical analysis skills necessary to design and develop effective, measurable training interventions.

1:00p - 1:45p "Compliance and Regulatory Training: Turn Boring into Engaging"
Presented by Susan Boyd: President, Susan Boyd Associates

Many companies are faced with the challenge of providing training on an annual basis to meet compliance and regulatory requirements. Using e-Learning courses can be one way of meeting this requirement, but won’t be effective if the learners won’t complete the courses. In this session, we will discuss the challenges and present design tips to make boring content more engaging and interactive for the learner.

2:00p - 2:45p "The Six Essentials of Synchronous Learning"
Presented by Stephen G. Hart: Asst VP, Organizational Learning and Development, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

Making a successful transition from classroom teacher or trainer to “live” virtual teacher or trainer requires thinking differently about the role of the educator and the kind of experience you want to create for your learners. In this session, you will learn six essential yet simple techniques for making your next “live” synchronous virtual online learning event one that your students will remember and appreciate.

3:00p - 3:45p "Emerging Technologies and Trends Effecting e-Learning"
Presented by Brian Pomeroy: Asst Director, Emerging Technologies and Strategic Planning, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

A review of emerging technologies that will affect the delivery and use of distance and e-learning through the coming years, as well as emerging trends that will determine what types of learning students and organizations will need. Discussion will also include an overview of methodologies for evaluating emerging technologies and trends, such as prototyping and scenario building.

TRACK 2: Developing Distance/e-Learning Initiatives

10:00a - 10:45a "Breaking Down the Barriers to Effective Training and Communication"
Presented by Mark Walker: Business Solutions, Macromedia, Inc.

Discover how to create and deliver dynamic and effective training courses and software simulations for distance learning, communications and training, staff development, and classroom instruction. Learn how Macromedia Breeze makes it easy to combine existing learning assets with real-time interactivity for collaborative communication, teaching and learning experiences. See how Breeze Live extends the Breeze platform with capabilities such as live and recorded audio and video, screen-sharing, two-way text chat, and more. Enjoy painless live meetings online or extend your training courses to the web. You’ll also learn how to create engaging software simulations in Flash format with ease, without knowing Macromedia Flash. Captivate (formerly RoboDemo) turns anything you record on your computer into an interactive, simulation, complete with audio, video, animations, four levels of interactivity, and more. Then see how to integrate Captivate projects with other Macromedia products and e-learning applications, such as Breeze, Flash, and Authorware, plus your learning management system.

11:00a - 11:45a Topic TBA

3:00p - 3:45p "Automatic Video Production Enables Informal Distance Learning"
Presented by Mike Bianchi: President, Foveal Systems

In today's widely scattered organizations it is almost certain that people who could have benefited from attending any given presentation in one location are far away or have scheduling conflicts. But traditional distance education techniques are not designed for the hands-off production necessary to make everyday informal events widely available as television programs. This presentation will report on how automatic video production of everyday meetings and presentations have provide such communications for a globally dispersed organization.

TRACK 3: Managing Distance/e-Learning Initiatives

11:00a - 11:45a "The Trials and Tribulations of an LMS Implementation"
Presented by Richard C. Kralevich, MSIT: Director of Instructional Design and Technology, The American College

About a year ago, we purchased an LMS – and like most companies, we dove right in with our implementation. One of the first things we found was that there was very little process-oriented data on how to conduct a successful LMS implementation. We felt like we were out there on our own. This case study presentation will cover: why we decided on the LMS we chose, challenges we faced during phase one and phase two of implementation, faculty related challenges, how we brought the college up to speed, as well as a list of things we would change if we had it to do all over again.

1:00p - 1:45p "Web-Based Training Content Strategy"
Presented by Don Duquette: Senior Vice President Learning Solutions, General Physics Corporation

The pressure to maintain competitive advantage has most organizations reevaluating their learning programs to determine the best methods for maintaining employee skill and knowledge levels. The speed at which business-critical competencies change today, however, has made event based solutions such as traditional classroom training difficult to implement on a rapid deployment basis. In order to effectively migrate content from the classroom to the web a strategy is required. This session will review the critical elements of an effective content strategy that include: Media Selection, Off-the-Shelf Courseware Evaluation, WBT Development Process,Learning Objects, and Revenue Considerations.

2:00p - 2:45p "Employment of Computer-based Distance Learning: Making It Work in Your Organization"
Presented by Chris McCollum, Ph.D.: Senior Cognitive Engineer, CHI Systems

The rapid move to introduce and adopt various forms of computer-based distance learning (CDL) technology into the workplace has occurred without empirical data on the way organizations adapt, or ought to adapt, to the new technology. This paper summarizes findings from a three-year research project that was intended to provide this data. The study has revealed technology-adoption concerns that must be addressed during the CDL design, development, and delivery process to ensure successful use of CDL.
