e-Learning and Performance Conference

November 11, 2003   Penn State Great Valley   8:00a to 4:30p

Keynote Address:

Organizational Goal Alignment: The Key to Effective Learning

Dr. Blaine Lee, Senior Executive Advisor, Franklin Covey Inc.

Learning is manifested when there is a relatively permanent change in behavior.  Organizations today must create systemic change or they will lose in their markets.  This change is not haphazard or casual. Organizations must say NO to many things and focus on those few wildly important goals, which will make the difference economically, and in the hearts and minds of their customers and employees. Employees must become passionate about those goals, must know how to translate them individual behaviors, must have readily available measures they tell reflect their progress, must have high trust relationships with managers and leaders, and must be willing to work together in a spirit of mutual accountability.  Unfortunately, recent studies reveal that most organizations have multiplied goals, fewer than half of employees actually know what those goals are, even fewer get regular feedback on their performance, and unless something dramatic happens, organizations of all kinds will lose their capacity to execute.  This highly interactive presentation will share the startling statistics which document current reality and will illustrate four powerful leadership tools for resolving this dilemma, which leading authorities continue to proclaim as the single most critical challenge facing business today.

Dr. Blaine Lee joined forces with Dr. Stephen Covey to found a leadership development company which would become one of the largest in the world.  Today he is the Senior Executive Advisor for this worldwide organization, which teaches and reaches nearly a million executives, managers and leaders annually.  From training Presidential Cabinets, to keynotes delivered throughout the world, to coaching CEOs, Dr. Lee brings his wise, caring approach to help today's leaders align goals for results.  Rave reviews from Larry King to Oprah have acclaimed his wisdom and his skill in helping others become their best.  With a belief that you were born to succeed, he has graciously agreed to share with us his knowledge and advice.

Blended Learning for Employee Training: Influencing Factors and Important Considerations

Doris Lee, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Georgianna Frenzelas, M.Ed., and Charles Anders, M. Ed.

Blended learning is the “blending” and “balancing” of all the aspects of the two major modalities: face-to-face, instructor-led instruction and e-learning. Its purpose in employee training is to have these two modalities build on each other, rather than treating each other as mutually exclusive, in order to achieve better training results. This presentation will first explain each of these two modalities in details, discuss advantages and limitations of each modality and introduce examples of successful blended learning used in corporations. This presentation will continue to address influencing factors and important considerations of blended learning while providing suggestions for its effective design.

Ty's Tirade: The Best and Worst of Instructional Design in e-Learning:
Ty Johnson, V.P. SoftAssist, Inc

If nothing else, it causes one to have some strong (but hopefully sound!) opinions on the good vs. the bad in instructional design. Come ready for a lively presentation-replete with examples-featuring both the pinnacles and pitfalls of instructional design in the e-learning world. Bonus feature: A rare look at the work of one SoftAssist client that earned them e-learning gold from Brandon Hall!
