About Our Host

Devereux is the nation's largest non-profit provider of behavioral healthcare for individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities, behavioral disorders and mental illness. It serves more than 15,000 children, adolescents, adults and their families in 15 centers in 11 states. Devereux was started in 1912 by south Philadelphia schoolteacher Helena T. Devereux. Her special interest was focused on the "slow learners" who were often placed in the back of the room. Her success in reaching out to those children became the cornerstones of modern day special education. Devereux continues to reach out to children, adolescents and adults with a variety of services that truly changes lives every day. As we begin our 6th year, The Pennsylvania/Delaware/New Jersey Distance Learning Association, invites you to take an active part in helping to build upon our success and expand the value of our organization to our members and participants. This event will feature two workshops that will use the power of our collective expertise to build our community of practice, while providing you with the skills and knowledge to do the same within your organization. "The concept of a community of practice (often abbreviated as CoP) refers to the process of social learning that occurs when people who have a common interest in some subject or problem collaborate over an extended period to share ideas, find solutions, and build innovations. It refers as well to the stable group that is formed from such regular interactions." - Wikipedia

Creating a Community of Practice
Facilitated by Victoria Odhner

As members of the regional distance learning community, what is going well for you? What could make your daily work and life go even better? If you had all the support you needed, what would it look like? What if this group of people were to become your primary resource for furthering your career and your work? This interactive workshop will ask these and other questions in a series of activities, to help us create a vision for moving forward as an organization and as a community.

Using the Community of Inquiry Model
Facilitated by Dr. Catherine Carsley

In 2001, a group of influential Canadian researchers described the online educational experience in terms of a "community of inquiry." Their model, which provides a framework for evaluating the success and comprehensiveness of online learning, describes three overlapping spheres of presence in online courses: social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence. This session explains the interaction of these three overlapping spheres and then discusses how to use the Community of Inquiry model to assess the success of online courses.
