2:15p-2:35p Viddler “Can Video Be Truly Interactive?”

For many educators and corporate trainers, online video is merely a distraction or (at best) a passive experience. It's also largely designed for viewing on a desktop or laptop computer, using Flash and other aging technologies. Now that more students and trainees are using smartphones and tablets, we need to consider how interactive video is experienced on these devices, and how video can become more effective as a learning tool. At a recent monthly PADLA meeting in Philadelphia, members participated in a Viddler focus group. They discussed what an interactive, training-optimized video player should look like, and how it should behave on smaller screen devices. After lots of hands-on experimentation, some clear trends emerged. The result is Viddler's latest version of its advanced HTML5 video player: Arpeggio. This session will be the first public showing of Viddler's new player UI, highlighting the many ways in which it can maximize the learning potential of online video, changing it from a passive experience in a measurable, interactive one.

John Parsons ([email protected]) is the VP of Business Development and Communication at Viddler, a developer of interactive video solutions to training and education problems. John was formerly an internationally known writer and consultant in the publishing technology, media, and communications industries, and was the Editorial Director of The Seybold Report.

2:40p-3:00p *Mersive “Unlocking Display Infrastructure with Software”

There were 14 trillion pixels deployed into our public and common spaces last year.  Unfortunately, users are unable to access these displays without a physical video cable, and when they do, displays are dedicated to the single content source.  This display paradigm hasn’t been challenged until recently. However newly-developed software has unlocked displays – providing users access via Wi-Fi and creating a networked infrastructure.  The approach is based on the view that displays should be shared and managed with software to become powerful collaboration and visualization assets.

In 2006, Christopher Jaynes co-founded Mersive and now serves as the company’s Chief Technology Officer. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the School of Computer Science at the University of Utah and a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Prior to his work at Mersive, Jaynes helped found the University of Kentucky Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments where he studied problems related to virtual reality and novel display systems. At Mersive, he has pioneered two display software products, one for cross-platform wireless visual collaboration and edge-blending software to automatically align multiple projectors into a seamless image of extraordinary quality and resolution.
