CAVE TOUR

Attendees will take part in a guided tour of Villanova University's Immersive Studies CAVE, managed by the Center of Excellence in Enterprise Technology. Funded in in part by NSF MRI/ACI grant, the CAVE provides viewers with an immersive experience viewing and interacting with 3D virtual-reality worlds, 3D big-data displays, and 3D models of real-world locations and objects. Some of the facility's features include:

  • An 18-ft wide by 10-ft deep by 7.5-ft high enclosure within which viewers can interact with a virtual world.
  • A extendable projected ceiling. This means the Villanova CAVE can be operated to project on either three walls and a floor, or three walls and a ceiling.
  • Integration with a robot (Seemore) designed at Villanova that carries a spherically immersive video camera array for capturing video that covers 360 degrees horizontally and 280 degrees vertically. This video can be played and controlled interactively in the Villanova CAVE.
  • A commitment to support researchers across Villanova as well as collaborate with academic and industry researchers around the world.

"Nine Ways to Implement Continuous Learning and Solve the Forgetting Problem" by Steven Just, Chief Learning Officer of Intela Learning

In addition to the CAVE tour, attendees will actively participate in a workshop covering the science of learning and remembering, and why learners forget. It highlights nine practical continuous learning strategies to overcome the forgetting problem.

Years of research have shown that 60-80% of what is taught in courses (instructor-led or eLearning) is not transferred to the job. This has been a source of frustration to trainers for decades. But we now have a solution to this problem because we are at the beginning of a new technology-enabled era in learning: the era of Continuous Learning.

Era one of training was dominated by instructor-led courses and training binders and era two by eLearning and LMSs. The Continuous Learning era is enabled by mobile devices, cloud computing and advances in our understanding of how people learn, retain what they have learned and transfer learning to the job.

Presenter Bio: Steven Just, Chief Learning Officer of Intela Learning, was previously the founder and CEO of Pedagogue Solutions, the premier assessment management system company. After 25 years of growing Pedagogue into the industry leader, Dr. Just sold Pedagogue to Saba, where he helped unify Pedagogue into the Saba Talent Management system and advised on assessment and learning strategy. Dr. Just has a master’s degree in computer science, a doctorate in educational psychology and over 25 years’ experience working with the world’s leading companies helping them to create learning and assessment strategies based on the latest research in cognitive science. Earlier in his career he worked at Bell Labs where he did research on computer applications in learning and assessment. He has taught hundreds of workshops and is a frequent speaker at professional conferences. He is a regular contributor to Focus, the professional magazine of the Life Science Trainers and Educators Network (LTEN), and is a member of the LTEN Editorial Advisory Board.

"Microsoft Office 365 Tools for Distance Learning: Part II"

This follow-up demonstration by Dr. Valentina DeNardis from Villanova, will highlight a number of Microsoft Office 365 tools which can be used in distance learning. OneNote Class/Staff Notebook, Office Mix, Sway, and Forms offer a variety of functions, including online student advising and administrative tools for faculty/staff, online student collaboration, and online presentations with video and quiz questions.  Sample uses will be presented, as well as instructions on how to use each tool.

About Our Host Villanova University

To this day, Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic intellectual tradition is the cornerstone of an academic community in which students learn to think critically, act compassionately and succeed while serving others. There are more than 10,000 undergraduate, graduate and law students in the University’s six colleges.

The Human Resources Development Program has been a leader in graduate education in human resources for over 35 years. Our program's balance of theory and practicum, professors who are active in the industry and a focus on emerging trends in this dynamic field prepare our students for success. Offered both on-campus and online, students have the flexibility to complete a degree at their own pace.
