    • 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM
    • La Salle University

You, and your professional colleagues, are cordially invited to attend the next regularly scheduled meeting of the PA/DE/NJ Distance Learning Association covering both effective instructional design and the necessary legal steps needed to take in order to protect your learners' and institution's private data. Presentations include:

Supporting Students Through Universal Design – presented by Holly Harner, Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs,  and Nick Gogno, Director, Instructional Design, at La Salle University

In this session, we will review the basic principles of Universal Design and how they relate to learning, their importance for promoting student retention, and accessibility of digital content and data. We will identify ways that educators can apply Universal Design for Learning guidelines to develop curricula, select materials, and create safe and effective learning environments. We will examine accessibility best practices for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files, YouTube videos, and other formats.

Data is the New Oil: The Value of Protecting Your Information in a Digital Age - presented by Rebecca L. Rakoski, Esquire & Jordan F. Fischer, Esquire from the XPAN Law Group
Malware, ransomware, phishing, vishing:  these are just a few of the creative ways cybercriminals have developed to access your important data- and they are coming up with better versions every day. The WannaCry attack that left hospitals in the United Kingdom unable to perform surgeries was mutated into a more sophisticated version with Petya a few months later that attacked banks, power companies and Maersk (a huge shipping company). Cyber experts universally agree that what is the most alluring to cybercriminals is large amounts of data.  And what industry today, including Training Technologies, does not have large amounts of data of all kinds?
With the increasing occurrence of cyber crimes against businesses, governments and academic institutions, this presentation will provide guidance on how best to approach and protect this data when it comes to cybersecurity, emphasizing the risks and heightened levels of scrutiny associated with protecting learner data. We will discuss the differences between the various types of “hacking” incidents and review the immediate concerns when you realize your system has been “hacked”.  This includes when an organization is required to report a breach and what those breach notification requirements are in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

ABOUT OUR HOST: La Salle University

La Salle University has educated talented students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds for more than 150 years. As a teaching innovator, St. John Baptist de La Salle was dedicated to meeting students where they are, a core principle that continues to guide our educatioal philosophy. It is this approach that landed La Salle's fifth-place ranking on Money magazine's 50 CollegesThat Add the Most Value List: "What's impressive is when a college helps students do far better than would be expected from their academic and economic backgrounds." La Salle University doesn’t just provide students with a degree. It gives them an education, inside and outside the classroom. With the guidance to blaze their own path, Explorers go into the world with certainty and purpose as confident, impactful, and productive global citizens.
